Condition

Integrative treatment for anxiety.

Anxiety is not a character flaw, a lack of discipline, or evidence that you're doing something wrong. It's a physiological and psychological state — one that can be understood, treated, and, for most people, meaningfully relieved.

What this actually is

Anxiety is your brain and body's threat-response system, running when no real threat is present. That system is useful — it's why your ancestors survived. But when it runs constantly or activates at the wrong moments, it stops protecting you and starts exhausting you. Racing thoughts. Tight chest. Disrupted sleep. A sense of bracing that never lets up.

Clinically, anxiety shows up in several forms: generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, health anxiety, and anxiety that rides alongside depression, ADHD, or trauma.

Why the standard approach often falls short

The standard approach is a short psychiatry visit, a prescription for an SSRI or benzodiazepine, and a referral to therapy. For some people, that works. For many, it doesn't — because it skips the questions that actually predict response: how is your sleep? Your alcohol intake? Your hormones? Is there a traumatic history? How does your body metabolize the medication?

The Elevae approach

Biology

Labs (thyroid, B12, iron, vitamin D, inflammation), hormonal review, and — when appropriate — pharmacogenomic testing.

Mind

A thorough psychiatric evaluation to confirm the diagnosis and rule out conditions that present as anxiety (hyperthyroidism, perimenopause).

Lifestyle

Caffeine, alcohol, sleep, screens, and movement all directly influence anxiety circuits. We look at them honestly.

Relationships

A nervous system that never rests cannot heal. We examine work, relationships, and daily pace.

Meaning

Chronic anxiety is sometimes a signal that your life is misaligned with your values.

What treatment typically looks like

Most new clients begin with a 60–90 minute integrative intake. Within two weeks, you'll have a written treatment plan that may include therapy, medication, supplements, sleep interventions, and — for some — pharmacogenomic testing. Follow-ups are 45 minutes. Most clients notice meaningful change within 6–12 weeks.

When medication helps, and when it doesn't

SSRIs, SNRIs, buspirone, and (used carefully, short-term) benzodiazepines or beta-blockers have evidence for anxiety. Medication is less helpful when anxiety is primarily driven by unaddressed lifestyle factors. We'll tell you which category your anxiety is in.

Lifestyle interventions that actually work

  • Sleep. Seven to nine hours, consistent timing, dark room. Poor sleep is a direct anxiety amplifier.
  • Aerobic exercise. 3–4 times a week, 30+ minutes. Effect size on anxiety is real.
  • Caffeine. Cap at 200 mg before noon for most people with anxiety.
  • Alcohol. Rebound anxiety from alcohol is common and underappreciated.
  • Omega-3s, magnesium glycinate, and L-theanine have the best evidence of commonly-used anxiety supplements.

Pharmacogenomics and anxiety

About 25–40% of people carry genetic variations that change how they metabolize common anxiety medications. We order pharmacogenomic testing when someone has tried two or more medications without clear benefit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if what I'm feeling is anxiety or stress?

Stress is a response to a specific situation. Anxiety is a prolonged state that persists even when the situation resolves. If you're bracing even on the weekend or on vacation, it's usually closer to anxiety.

Can I treat anxiety without medication?

Yes, and many of our clients do. Therapy, lifestyle, sleep, and targeted supplementation resolve anxiety for a substantial portion of people.

Are benzodiazepines safe?

Short-term and used carefully, yes. Long-term use carries real risks including dependence. We rarely prescribe them as a long-term solution.

How long until I feel different?

Most people notice meaningful change within 6–12 weeks of consistent, multi-modal treatment. Sleep and caffeine changes can produce effects within days.

What if I've tried everything and nothing worked?

That's one of the most common reasons people come to Elevae. We approach treatment-resistant anxiety with a fresh workup — labs, pharmacogenomics, trauma history, and a careful review of what was actually tried.
